Getting the Lead Out—For Good

Illinois leads the nation in the number of children identified as lead poisoned—more than 16,000 in 2002 alone—and an estimated 1.8 million homes in Illinois are contaminated with lead.

While lead poisoning is potentially devastating, it is entirely preventable. That’s why an alliance of organizations joined forces in 2004 to combat the threat.

Through a series of strategic planning sessions, VDC helped the fledgling, 40-member coalition reinvent itself as Lead Safe Illinois. A new logo, key messages, website and corresponding identity materials helped establish the coalition’s profile in the public policy arena and create a climate for passage of landmark legislation in 2006.

Now known around the State Capitol as the “the lead people,” Lead Safe is a well recognized and established advocacy organization.
