Heartland Alliance Brings Poverty to the Headlines

More than 12 million people in the state of Illinois are living in poverty. Every day working families struggle to make ends meet. Though eradicating poverty in Illinois is not a quick fix, the Heartland Alliance Mid-America Institute on Poverty (MAIP) focuses on long-term solutions to this plight by educating policymakers about its causes and its cures.

Since 2000, Valerie Denney Communications has publicized the organization’s annualReport on Illinois Poverty, the first and only comprehensive account of the state of poverty in Illinois. VDC has placed more than 500 print stories on the annual report around Illinois and has positioned the study as a key source of information on poverty.

VDC also has helped to establish MAIP as the leading poverty expert in the state. Spokespeople from MAIP have offered commentary on important poverty trends and news such as the relocation of Hurricane Katrina evacuees to Chicago and the annual U.S. Census release of poverty data, reaching Midwestern and national media markets.
