For 20 years, the name Valerie Denney Communications (VDC) has been synonymous with public relations in the public interest. I provide communications services to non-profit organizations, government agencies, and philanthropic institutions that seek to shape policy, promote social consciousness and enrich the culture.  My work includes experience working on major public issues, including policies related to housing, the environment, education, civil rights, health care, energy, consumer advocacy and urban planning.

 

Dramatic changes in the media and communications fields over the last few years have opened up powerful new opportunities for nonprofit organizations and others engaged in social change to tell and distribute their own stories. My areas of special expertise include:

• Strategy + communications. I bring both a strategic and a communications lens to leadership teams engaged in nonprofit campaigns.
• Effective message systems and issue framing in complex situations. I help organizations sort through their options and develop powerful messages that speak to target audiences.
• Coalition communications.  I help coalitions move beyond “lowest common denominator” messages to messages that serve individual member interests while advancing the aims of the group as a whole
• Staff training and mentoring. I help organizations expand their communications capacities, including spokesperson training
• Thoughtful materials that help define complex issues; case studies, speeches, short reports, PowerPoint presentations, fact sheets, opinion pieces, short videos. I write and produce materials that frame the issue.
